What causes a pumpkin pie filling to crack?

I see such pretty pumpkin pies on tv, but once in awhile, mine comes out with a big crack in it. I don’t care for whipped cream on top, or I would do that to hide the crack. lol
How can I keep my pie filling from cracking, and hopfully come out pretty like they are suppose to?

When it is heated in the oven the filling expands and then when it cools it contracts causing the cracks.

    overbaking causes the crack

Over cooking is one reason, also cooking too fast, as in too hot an oven. Not all ovens are the same. Another reason is overmiving the filling once the eggs are added. when you beat eggs too quickly there is added air in the batter.

Sometimes the crust is made unevenly or the holes might be made wrong in the pie or it just cracked because it was too dry and because of the heat in the oven.
